Scott

Scott, age 7
Dayton, Ohio (1976)

I was doing financial paperwork the other day, and it reminded me how in the 2nd grade, I was taught to draw what was allegedly a "proper" number "2".

The same teacher would also read our "writing" homework out loud for the entire class.

If she disliked your sentences, she would sing her opinion in this imperious, operatic voice:

"Booooorrriiiiinnnnnggggg!"

Well, being the creative creature I am, I decided to write my number 2's with a "wavy swoosh" at the bottom.

She berated me for it in front of the class, and it went like this:

Teacher: "Is this how I told you to write your 2's?"
Me: "No."
Teacher: "Then why didn't you write them the way I told you to?"
Me: "Because your way is [singing at the top of my lungs] "BBBBBOOOOOOORRRRRRIIIIIINNNNNNGGGG!"

I went to the Principal's office for that one, who couldn't stop laughing about it.
And today, I still write my number 2's with the swoosh.

Scott, age 6
Durban, South Africa (1991)

There are defining moments in all our lives where we accurately depict a stereotype. This was my day to bloom. My sister obviously caught my attention with her new garb, and that shade of pink still seems to have that effect on me.

"Being fabulous, naturally"
If you look at all the expressiveness on my face, you can tell there is a sense of enlightenment there, a kind of insight that can only be explained by biology.

From that moment, I knew who I wanted to be, what I wanted to wear, and who I wanted to be surrounded by.

Looking back, seeing my gob-smacked hysterical outburst, it’s clear to me who made being me, as easy as it was.

So to my sister: Cheers to every silent creatress camouflaged in pink.

Scott, age 5
Oldsmar, Florida (1964)

I grew up in Oldsmar, Florida where this pic was taken. As you can see, I was always a "show-off" and liked attention.

Unfortunately, I got teased and hassled through high school. Certainly not the type of attention I wanted, but I persisted and I survived.

I first started realizing I was different around 3rd grade, but did not formally "come-out" until my early 20’s.

Now, as I look at the picture, I understand why my mother told me she already knew, when I finally told her. I also realized that I had some fun growing up, despite the teasing.

I'm 51 now, and relatively successful, and my life is good.

So, my advice to those being teased, hazed, and hassled:
Hang in there, because all that negativity will end soon enough.

You will grow up, look back at the fun times with a smile, and look at the hard times with a feeling of pride and accomplishment - for those were the tests of your resolve to succeed.

Scott, age 3
Oshkosh, Wisconsin (1965)

My mother sent me this photo about a year ago, and I still don't know why she chose this to send me. That's me on the left squatting, next to my brother Brad.

"Born a bottom? Well, duh!"
I knew I was gay in kindergarten.
I remember being out for recess, and playing jump-rope with the little girls. I distinctly remember watching the high school boys play basketball with their shirts off.

I felt like an outsider because of my femininity, and I disappeared into a fantasy world that I watched on TV. I wanted to be Keith Partridge and live in Hollywood.

Today I'm 48 and I live in Hollywood, and I AM kind of like Keith Partridge.

Many dark years were in between today and those times of daydreaming & watching the TV.

But I never lost sight of my dream and have never been happier in my life!

Scott's first, famous-person same sex crush:
David Cassidy (on "The Partridge Family")
He had such a swagger with those hip-hugger jeans and that long hair.
I still love guys with long hair!
